The Computing Research Association

The Computing Research Association (CRA) is an association of more than 160 North American academic departments of computer science and computer engineering, industrial laboratories engaging in basic computing research, and affiliated professional societies.

CRA's mission is to represent and inform the computing research community and to support and promote its interests. CRA seeks to strengthen research and education in the computing fields, expand opportunities for women and minorities, and improve public and policymaker understanding of the importance of computing and computing research in our society.

CRA was formed in 1972 as the Computer Science Board to provide a forum for the chairs of Ph.D.-granting computer science departments to discuss issues and share information. Over the years, it increased its concern for research and development in the computing fields, and changed its name to the Computing Research Association in 1990.

The CRA Board of Directors is a distinguished group of leaders in computing research from academia and industry. The board is elected by CRA's member organizations. Representatives from each of the affiliated professional societies also are appointed to serve on the board.

CRA Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research

The Computing Research Association Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRAW) is taking positive action to increase the number of women participating in computer science and engineering (CS&E) research and education at all levels.

The committee seeks to help CS&E women be more successful by providing mentoring, networking, and a forum for addressing problems that often fall disproportionately to women. CRAW is committed to improving the working environment for all computer scientists and engineers.

CRAW receives National Science Foundation funding that is used to defray the cost of travel to meetings and as seed money for committee projects. Additional NSF funding has helped support several larger projects.

The committee co-chairs are Mary Jane Irwin of Pennsylvania State University (mji@cse.psu.edu, 814-865-1802) and Fran Berman of the University of California, San Diego (berman@cs.ucsd.edu, 619-534-6195). Contact the CRA office (kpeaks@cra.org, 202-234-2111) for additional information.

CRAW Graduate Information Kit

The Computing Research Association's (CRA) Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRAW) is publishing a graduate information kit in print and as a World Wide Web (WWW) page.

An excerpt from the kit is already available on the WWW. Just access the URL address http://cra.org/womencom.html When the kit is published in hard copy, ordering information will also be available on the WWW.
