The CGI (Common Gateway Interface) between an httpd server and a program

To interact with your readership on the World Wide Web, you must create an interface between the client's browser and the server. This interface most often comes in the form of a form. (Please excuse this painful play on words.)

The standard for handling this type of interaction is called the Common Gateway Interface or CGI for short.
